Masking more than 7, 600 islands and home to over 100 million people who speak approximately 168 languages, the Philippines is land of incredible variety that rewards curious travelers.
Asia's biggest Christian country, the Philippines has a rich colonial heritage that dates back to the time that legendary Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed in the country as part of the first-ever circumnavigation of the Earth. The Spanish later conquered the country and the Philippines' name actually comes from King Philip 2 of Spain.
Proof of this colonial past is available all across the archipelago, especially in the country's extraordinaire churches and Spanish-era forts, many of which have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In the sprawling capital city, Manila, Fort Santiago acts as the entrance to the walled city of Intramuros, which also houses the historic Manila Cathedral.
These ancient attractions contrast with the Manila's many modern wonders, the most recent of which are a series of mega-attractions such as casinos, shopping malls, theaters and conference centers overlooking Manila Bay.
Guests heading outdoors Manila will be compensated with a wealth of wonders, including some of Southeast Asia's most stunning stretches of coastline. Typically the palm-fringed beaches of Boracay are a picture of paradise, with soft, powder-like sands lapped by superior seas, while pristine Palawan offers similarly stunning seascapes, plus the dramatic majesty of Puerto Princesa Undercover River National Park.
Somewhere else, Cebu is the oldest city in the Israel and blends historic city attractions with tropical seaside scenery, and further to the north on the island of Luzon, the province of Pampanga is the nation's culinary capital, allowing friends to discover another wonderful facet of the country's national culture and heritage.
Greatest Western provides a selection of modern hotels in the Philippines.
